About Wabeno

The Town of Wabeno in Forest County was officially established in 1897. The town was named after a weather event in 1880. During June of that year a tornado in the area blew down the timber in a swath between ½ and 1 mile wide. In the local Native American dialect this was called Wabeno which means the coming of the winds. Hence the name of the town.

Today, the town has a population of 1,130 residents who enjoy the simple small-town life. Within Wabeno you’ll find many things to do including traveling down scenic Rustic Road 118, taking a ride on Wabeno’s Motorcycle Path, or visiting the Potawatomi Carter Casino.

Wabeno is conveniently located in the Nicolet National Forest which provides endless opportunities for residents to get out and explore the wilderness they live in. All around the area there are tons of opportunities to fish, hunt, hike, and do all sorts of outdoor recreational activities. Driving on the roads around the area also provide opportunities to see some spectacular views of the forest.
