Bessemer is located on US 2 with Ironwood several miles to the west and Wakefield several miles to the east. Mining was the major industry while logging was the number two industry of Bessemer and the region. Mining began in 1883.
Bessemer is the county seat of Gogebic County. The town is surrounded by bluffs on all sides, which enhances its wonderful location in Big Snow Country. Bessemer offers four seasons of activities. The winter months offer a wide variety of outdoor recreation with Big Powderhorn, Blackjack and Indianhead ski areas located within a few miles of Bessemer. Downhill skiing, cross-country skiing, snowboarding and snowmobiling are available throughout the area.
The summer months provide a wide variety of hiking trails. One such trail is The North Country Trail which runs for 6 miles and passes Conglomerate Falls, Gorge and Potawatomi Falls, Rainbow Falls and Sandstone Falls. The trail continues on to eventually wind up at the Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park.
Known for its year â€˜round festivals and the Boulder Creek Golf Course, Bessemer has a great deal to offer with jobs in the service industry, health care, and small manufacturing. Today the City of Bessemer’s industries are mainly logging & lumbering and tourism.
